Conservativism and the Obama Phenomena
1980-the Present

"Government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem."

Ronald Reagan
Reagan caught everyone off guard....

...since the Progressive Movement of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, solidified by FDR's New Deal and LBJ's Great Society, social programs basically began to run the country - and most of every facet of American lives.

Reagan and the Conservative Revolution changed that - or did it?
Soon after the Reagan presidency, the country shifted once again toward a more liberal, socialized approach until...

...the Obama Phenomena.

This week we will end our class discussions with how independent we were in the 18th-19th centuries, only to slowly become more and more dependent in the early 20th century to the present. What does this mean for America today?

What does it mean to you?

The FINAL EXAM STUDY GUIDE can be obtained here.

The 6th grade final will be on Wednesday, May 21st.

REMEMBER - you may recite the Declaration of Independence (either verbally or written), as an optional replacement! YOU DO NOT NEED TO KNOW THE SIGNERS OF THE DOCUMENT!

You must arrange this with Mr. Johnson, if you chose to recite the Declaration. You will also not be able to take the other final, if you chose to do the recitation - so make sure.

We will review some this week but the MAIN REVIEW is next Monday and Tuesday - come with your guides filled in (as far as you can)...

    • PRESIDENTIAL LIST

      SUBJECT: Vietnam/Watergate 1954-1976

"Well, I'm not a crook....I hereby resign this office of president of the United States."

      Richard Nixon
      August 9, 1974

We were embroiled in war in South East Asia - Vietnam.

We will continue analyzing our nation's involvement in a war to avoid the Domino Effect - but as the war escalated under Lyndon B. Johnson, the American people (especially the young men forced to die) changed their viewpoints, quickly seeing Vietnam as an unpopular war. Therefore, they sent a clear message to Washington, electing Richard Nixon.

Nixon had significant accomplishments (including reaching out to China), but he will be forever known by the scandal, Watergate - and he will always be known as the only President who resigned...before facing impeachment.

The end of the twentieth century enters a troublesome time...

REMEMBER THIS IS A 100 POINT ASSIGNMENT
DUE: Thursday, May 15 (ONLY 2 WEEKS)

        Friday, April 25, 2014

        SUBJECT: Vietnam Era 1954-1976

"If I left [the war in Vietnam] and let the Communists take over South Vietnam, then I would be seen as a coward and my nation would be seen as an appeaser, and we would both find it impossible to accomplish anything for anybody anywhere on the entire globe."

        Lyndon B. Johnson
        Memoirs, 1971

The Cold War was in full "heat"...as well as the Civil Rights Movement in America. But across the Pacific, issues that had been boiling since the end of World War II erupted into civil war in South East Asia - Vietnam.

One of those places most Americans had never heard of, Vietnam became a quagmire. Because we were in the United Nations, one of those "entangling alliances" George Washington warned us to avoid about 160 years earlier, we were pulled into a war that has defined a generation.

It was a troublesome time in our history.

        It was a violent time.

This week we will analyze the causes for American involvement in Vietnam and the results of that war.

          CONTINUED

Yup - SBAC testing for MATH is continued this week. So Monday and Wednesday will be regular days - Tuesday and Thursday, not as much....but you are pioneers - you can do it!

          SUBJECT: Civil Rights Era 1945-1975

"Although I wasn't invited to shake hands with Hitler, I wasn't invited to the White House to shake hands with the President either."

          Jesse Owens

The Cold War was in full "heat" and the nation was just learning what it felt like to be free from the struggles of war (WWII and Korea)...only to be embroiled in another "war"...the Civil Rights Movement!

We ended slavery in 1865 with the 13th Amendment.

Our Congress then passed the 14th Amendment, promising to allow any naturalized or born person to be recognized as a citizen of America.
Only to follow up with the 15th Amendment, ensuring any male citizen the right to vote - regardless of color!

Too bad so many still held to archaic prejudices and never ending biases.
The Civil War had ended in 1865.
But it took another hundred years to teach the nation what freeing the slaves meant - universal acceptance of people of different race.

SUBJECT: The Cold War (CONTINUED) 1945-1963

"We walked to the brink and we looked it in the face..."

            John Foster Dulles
            Secretary of State

            BRINKMANSHIP...
The practice of pushing a diplomatic situation to the very "brink" of disaster (even war) to force your opponent to agree to your position or belief.
            Dangerous? Maybe.

            But it worked.

The Cold War was a dangerous time - and yet a time of great achievement (landing on the moon, for instance), in technology (telecommunications, electronics, power, even the computer), as well as prosperity (during the Reagan years). We will continue our discussion on the Cold War era and the events that corresponded.

            SUBJECT: The Cold War 1945-1963

"...the United States has it in its power to increase enormously the strains under which Soviet policy must operate, to force upon the Kremlin a far greater degree of moderation and circumspection than it has had to observe in recent years, and in this way to promote tendencies which must eventually find their outlet in either the breakup or the gradual mellowing of Soviet power."

            George Kennan
The Sources of Soviet Conduct (1947)

            World War II was over.
A new "war" began - a clash of cultures and economic world perspectives that lead to the COLD WAR, all shadowed under the ATOMIC, and much more destructive, HYDROGEN BOMB. We will continue analyzing this challenging period of time in our history that reaches to our very present today...
