SUBJECT: Between Two Wars 1898 - 1917

America was developing into a world power.
A win in Cuba, a rebellion in the Philippines, and a canal in Panama would extend our influence greatly - then the world erupted into the "War that would End All Wars"...but would it really?...

...and what was America's role in it?...

SUBJECT: The Spanish American War April-August, 1898

"A splendid little war."
Secretary of State, John Hay

According to the Monroe Doctrine of 1823, "...the American continents, by the free and independent condition which they have assumed and maintain, are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers." But Cuba was still a Spanish colony.

And over zealous, often untrue newspaper reporting (yellow journalism) of Spanish treatment of Cubans enraged many Americans.

...and then the U.S.S. Maine exploded in Havana Harbor.

The emerging superpower of the United States soon went to war...

This week we will explore as we were expanding our influence in the world, we would use our military, economic and political powers in methods and in locations unique in our history. We were no longer isolationists.

SUBJECT: The U.S.A. Looks Overseas 1853 - 1915
"What the Mediterranean Sea was to the Greeks, breaking the bonds of custom, offering new experiences, calling out new institutions and activities, that, and more, the ever retreating frontier has been to the United States."
Frederick Jackson Turner

Manifest Destiny was over - Turner's Thesis said so.

But America's move "WEST" and "OUT" was not finished - as she developed into a world power, she followed the examples of all the world power nations and became IMPERIALISTIC.

We will discuss America's rise to power and her expansion into the world theatre this week.

You will have due:
  • NHD Notecard Outline Compilation Assignment - 50 points to you individually + 50 points for your team assembly of ALL your team notecards. You must have your personal research notecards compiled before class (I will be grading those first thing) - then you will have time in class to assemble all your team cards into one grouping.

Click here for the assignment details and rubric.

SUBJECT: The Declaration of Independence in the Progressive Era (The Women's Rights Movement)
"We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men and women are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness..."

July 2, 1776 - July 19, 1848
The Declaration of Independence and the Declaration of Sentiments...
Both documents declared for freedom. Both were based on the idea of independent and free men ~ and WOMEN!
This week we will discuss the foundational document that made America - but another document that was voiced in the early Women's Rights Movement - and into the Progressive Era...

Should not the phrase "all men" include "all women"?

SUBJECT: Progressive, Political Reform 1870 - 1920
"It was we, the people, not we, the white male citizens, nor yet we, the male citizens; but we, the whole people, who formed this Union."

Susan B. Anthony dared to do the unthinkable - VOTE! And it raised the eyebrows, and fury, of many. But it also illustrates the political/social time period at the transition between the 19th/20th centuries. We were PROGRESSING and that meant a change in how people viewed their culture - and their government.

We will discuss the beginning of a new era in our nation's history this week.

REMEMBER to go over your notes (and highlight) 3-5 minutes daily - there will be a TEST...WEDNESDAY!...
We will review but expect the test to be over material we have learned from the rise of the Industrial Age, to the Spanish-American War, to the Women's Rights Movement (what we will discuss this week). Go over your reading questions and class notes - study and review with your Study Buddy!

_________________________________________

We are doing something a bit different in your reading this week. Read the most important document leading to our nation's birth - and we will discuss it's implications during the Progressive Era.
